Hannah Bardell was born in  Craigshill, Livingston, Scotland. She attended Broxburn Academy before going to the University of Stirling, where served as the National Union of Students’ women’s officer. She is also a Pushkin Prize winner for creative writing. Hannah joined the SNP in 2007 after meeting Alex Salmond.

She also worked in the Oil and Gas industry for Subsea 7 and for Stork where she was their Head of Communications & Marketing for the UK, Africa & Norway with Oil & Gas Service.

Her retirement from the oil and gas industry came into scrutiny when she would not reveal whether she had been paid to sign the NDA that she signed.

Hannah Bardell is engaged to her partner Emma. She is one of at least 45 LGBT MPs in the House of Commons as of December 2019.

After a series of sexual assaults against women, Hannah was reported to have suggested a curfew banning men from the streets after 6pm should be considered in areas where women have been killed.

She also accused independent unionist peer Lord Maginnis of verbally abusing security staff on the parliamentary estate. Lord Maginnis was subsequently suspended for his actions.
