Órfhlaith Begley is the Sinn Féin MP for West Tyrone. She was born in Carrickmore, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. After attending Law and Politics at Queens University Belfast. She went on to study at the Institute of Professional and Legal Studies graduating as a solicitor. Before being elected as a Member of Parliament, Begley practiced law in Portadown, County Armagh.
Following the resignation of the previous Sinn Féin MP Barry McElduff on 15 January, a by-election was called. She was declared the winner with a majority vote of 7,956. Since 1997, she is the first woman MP for the West Tyrone area. According to the party’s long-standing abstentionism policy, she does not sit in the House of Commons.
