Paul Beresford

Name: Sir Paul Beresford

Born: 6 April 1946

Party: Conservative

Constituency: Mole Valley in Surrey

Sir Paul Beresford is a British Conservative party politician for Mole Valley in Surrey. Beresford was born on 6 April 1946 in Levin, New Zealand. He attended the University of Otago in Dunedin and is a practicing dentist. Beresford is a dual British and New Zealand citizen.

Beresford was first elected to Wandsworth Borough Council in 1978 and served as Leader for most of the Thatcher administration. He was knighted in the 1990 New Year Honours for political and public service.

Beresford was chosen to represent the secure Conservative Croydon Central seat following the retirement of former Cabinet minister John Moore. He won his seat in the House of Commons at the 1992 general election and delivered his first speech on June 30, 1992. In 1994, he was employed as the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department for the Environment and remained in post until the government was defeated in 1997.

When the number of seats in Croydon was reduced from four to three ahead of the 1997 general election, he was unable to be chosen for the new constituency of Croydon Central and instead sought reelection as a Conservative in Surrey’s safe Mole Valley, where Kenneth Baker was retiring. He was elected toward the end of 1997.

Beresford supported the EU remaining in 2016’s Brexit referendum because he believed it was the better path for future generations.
