Peter Aldous was born in Ipswich, Suffolk, and has lived the majority of his life north of the county. He was educated at Harrow School and graduated with a degree in Land Management from the University of Reading in 1982. Peter Aldous worked as a chartered surveyor in Norwich prior to his election.

Aldous served as a councilor for Waveney District Council from 1999-2002. He worked as a Suffolk County Councilman from 2001 until 2005 and held the Deputy Leader position in the Conservative Party Group from 2002 to 2005.

Aldous was elected to contest the 2005 general election as a Conservative Party candidate for Waveney but lost to Labour Party Member of Parliament Bob Blizzard by a margin of 5,915. He contested the seat for an additional time at the 2010 general election. This time he obtained 40.2% of the overall vote sufficient to attain the seat by a majority of 769.

Aldous has been critical of his party’s implementation of Universal Credit, calling for the abolishment of the five-week wait time before receiving payments.

Peter Aldous won 31,778 votes out of a possible 51,090. This represents a 62.2% majority in his constituency. There was a voter turnout of 61.8%.
