Ali began his career with the Royal Mail after securing an engineering apprenticeship at age 17. He is a committed trade unionist and served as the political officer for the Communication Workers Union.
Since 1999, Ali has served on Birmingham City Council as a member of the Nechells Ward. He served as part of the council’s cabinet, taking on responsibilities such as local services, development, jobs, skills, and transport.
He was chosen as the Hall Green candidate after members of the Labour Party from Hall Green voted overwhelmingly in October 2019 to open up selection for their parliamentary candidate.
Ali has been a vocal critic of the government in India. In March 2021, Ali expressed his “complete support” for farmers protesting against the Indian government. He called for sanctions to be imposed on the country citing human rights abuses and military occupation of Kashmir. Ali additionally said that “Political opponents to Prime Minister Modi is not tolerated in India, and civil liberties of all Indians are being eroded by the extremist, right-wing government.”

Tahir Ali won 35,889 votes out of a possible 52,933. This represents a 67.8% majority in his constituency. There was a voter turnout of 65.9%.
