Phenomenology and hermeneutics are two philosophical methods that help people make sense of their world. Phenomenology is the study of objects as seen by consciousness, whereas hermeneutics is the process of interpreting. Though these concepts share some similarities, there are also some key differences.
What is Phenomenology?
Phenomenology is a method for studying consciousness and the things that can be experienced directly. The philosophical movement was established in the 20th century by Edmund Husserl. It was afterward developed by a group of his followers at Göttingen and Munich in Germany. [Source].
It is the study of how people experience consciousness. In essence, the term implies that someone has a functioning consciousness that allows them to comprehend life’s events. The meaning and value of life reside in the lived experience of human beings.
According to Merriam-Webster, phenomenology” can be defined as ” the study of phenomena,” which translates to “appearances of things, or things as they appear in our experience, or how we experience things.
What is Hermeneutics?
Hermeneutics refers to ” the study of interpretation, especially of the Bible or literary texts.” [Source]. Hermeneutics is the process of understanding a text or a statement. This includes using strategies to help when you don’t understand something right away. It also involves the art of communication, which helps in better understanding the text or statement. [Source]
The main goal of hermeneutics, especially for Jews and Christians, is to discover the truths and values expressed in the bible. For example, hermeneutics is used to interpret the Bible in various ways, including literal, moral, allegorical, anagogical, and mystical interpretations.
Literal interpretation states that bible contents must be read considering the author’s intention.
Moral interpretation is about finding the ethical teachings in something.
Allegorical interpretation argues that other external factors are to consider rather than what is mentioned in the bible.
Anagogical or mystical interpretation of the bible forecasts events to come.
Hermeneutics is used as an interpretation tool in understanding sacred text. The modern usage of this term means that it is a “philosophical study of interpretation.” Hermeneutics is the process of figuring out the meaning of a text. You use different interpretation models to help you understand what the text means.
Similarities between Phenomenology and Hermeneutics
The similarity between phenomenology and hermeneutics is that both are ways of understanding and interpreting the world. Heidegger’s philosophy in Being and Time introduced two concepts: hermeneutic phenomenology. He combined these concepts to create a new way of understanding his work, published in 1927. Both phenomenology and hermeneutics are used to interpret, with the former focusing on interpreting experience while the latter is limited to texts.
Difference between Phenomenology and Hermeneutics
The difference between phenomenology and hermeneutics is that phenomenology aims to “clarify, describe, and make sense of the structures and dynamics of pre-reflective human experience,” whereas hermeneutics aims to “articulate the reflective character of human experience; as it manifests in language and other forms of creative signs.” Also, hermeneutics is older than phenomenology in terms of usage. Hermeneutics focuses on interpreting texts, but phenomenology deals with interpreting experience, phenomena, or consciousness.
Hermeneutics focuses more on the language used to correctly interpret what the words mean, while phenomenology is all about appearances [Source 5]. Hermeneutics is concerned about the correct interpretation, while phenomenology allows the individual to attach their meaning to certain experiences. This also means that hermeneutics lacks free will since it has prescribed methods to interpret, and phenomenology gives free will to analyze experiences in whatever way one pleases to use. Hermeneutics is a philosophical method that limits people to the methods listed and restricts them from applying other philosophies. Phenomenology is open to collaboration with other ideas and movements.
