Difference between Social Welfare and Social Development

There is a difference between social welfare and social development, though both are aimed at improving society’s status. Social welfare is all about giving people what they need to survive, while social development focuses on giving people the tools they need to improve their lives. In this blog post, we will take a closer look at the differences between these two concepts.

      What is Social Development?

Social developement is about empowering individuals and communities to improve their social, economic and political conditions. It is about giving people the skills, knowledge and opportunities they need to reach their full potential.

      What are Social Welfare Services?

Social welfare refers to “transfer of cash or means from a group (mostly govt.) to those in need” [Source], so social welfare services are “integrated services within facilities and programme (including social security) that promote social development, social justice and social functioning of people” [Source].

      What are Social Services examples?

Social services programmes are part of systems designed to offer assistance to individuals and families in need. They include health care assistance, foods stamps and stimulus checks.

Relationship between Social Work and Social Development

The relationship between social work and social development is that the former tends to influence the latter. It is noted that “The principles of social development are related to social work. What they seek to achieve with social development is also what social work seeks to achieve, namely the concern with improving human well-being” [Source]. Other views argue that “Social development is about improving the well-being of every individual in society so they can reach their full potential. The success of a society is linked to the well-being of every citizen. Social development means investing in people” [Source], and this investment takes place through social work.

What is the difference between Social Welfare and Social Services?

The most notable difference between social welfare and social services is that social services denote programs such as health care and education rolled out to the general populace. Social welfare is seen as aid given to vulnerable groups such as the poor, disabled, unemployed or delinquent. Social services are the essential services that benefit people, such as health care, while social welfare caters for the needy and can mean the whole process of looking after vulnerable groups of people. Social services can be undertaken to a bigger population. Usually, the government is responsible for running these services whilst social welfare can either be on a large or small scale depending on the organisation carrying it out.

      Social Development in Social Welfare

Social development is the core value of social welfare, as evidenced by various social development programs. Social welfare targets vulnerable people so that they are not swallowed by hunger and poverty, thus aiding them to be equal to others who are privileged in society. Assisting disadvantaged groups is a form of social development which develops the human first, who will then uses their abilities to develop society.

      Examples of Social Development

      Examples of social development include:

      • An affordable education or healthcare or child care system.
      • Cheap houses and infrastructure development.
      • Decentralisation of business centres.
      • Local government establishment in small localities and the construction of recreational facilities in various sectors.

What is the importance of Social Development?

The importance of social development is that it focuses on aiding humanity in its livelihood. Developing a person will reflect on developing the surrounding environment since the individual would have been empowered to do wonders for the community. Also, social development is vital in enhancing the economic trajectory of a particular locality, thus, improving the living conditions within a certain place.

What are the 3 aspects of Social Development?

The 3 aspects of social development are social, cultural and political [Source]. Social elements focus on the society moving towards modernity, cultural aspects enable society to adhere to the dynamic trends necessary for development, and political aspects are centralised on the path of governing or ruling the people.

What is Social Development in education?

Social development in education entails empowering the learners or children on their lives’ academic and social aspects. Instead of being fed on books, students are taught life experiences and advice on how to handle themselves in society while using their education to improve the livelihood of society, as opposed to just becoming book worms which have no life tackling skills.

Difference between Social Work and Social Welfare

The difference between social work and social welfare is that social welfare is for government or other organisations who “create a system of programs and care for those in our community who need assistance: Those who are disabled; suffering from poverty, health ailments” and social work is a “specific profession – like a Nurse or Physician” [Source]. Social welfare assists the needy, and the assistance given is dictated by the system involved. On the other hand, social work means assistance given to people by considerably trained individuals who have specific professions. Social work is controlled by professionals called social workers, while social welfare can be undertaken as an assistance program controlled by any organisation or government.

Similarities between Social Work and Social Welfare

The similarities between social work and social welfare are that these entities focus on helping people who need assistance. This also means that both social work and social welfare are assistance programs. The government or private sector can carry them out in helping society. Social development is a tenet in both social work and social welfare. They lead to the enhancement of vulnerable people’s livelihoods.

What is development in Social Welfare?

Development in social welfare is noticeable when considering the founding roots of social welfare. Historically, social welfare is the brainchild of governments in providing aid to their citizens. This was done to ensure that no one suffers or is plunged into poverty. One might say that welfare aims to bring equality among people in a country by elevating vulnerable groups. Therefore, development is a feature of how people’s lives are improved by welfare. They can be skilled enough through various programs such as scholarships to help society use education. Aiding a person’s life yields results after that particular person starts working for their society, this development in both the individual and society.

What’s the difference between a Social Worker and a Sociologist?

The difference between a social worker and sociologists is that “social workers are those who apply sociology within a professional context” while sociologists “analyse and conduct research on social problems and social behaviour”. A social worker uses the tenets of sociology to help people, for instance, in counselling. They might also work in an organisation where their primary duty is to help people. On the other hand, sociologists conduct research and observe social behaviour for the primary purpose of getting data that can be used to enhance society.

      What is a Social Enterprise?

Social enterprise is a business model where the primary aim is to achieve a social, environmental or cultural impact. This means that the enterprise focuses on solving social problems instead of making profits for shareholders. The main source of income for social enterprises is from selling products and services. They reinvest their profits to achieve their mission or goals. A considerable number of social enterprises are non-profit organisations. Examples of social enterprises are charities, cooperatives, and mutual organisations.

      What is a Social Entrepreneur?

A social entrepreneur is an individual who uses business skills and acumen to come up with innovative solutions to social problems. They create or run social enterprises with the aim of achieving a social impact. A social entrepreneur is not motivated by making profits but by solving social issues. Bill Drayton, the founder of Ashoka, is an example of a social entrepreneur. He has helped over three thousand social entrepreneurs in over seventy countries.

What is the Structural theory in Social Work?

The structural theory in social work is a theory that looks at how different structures in society cause social problems. It is also known as the systems theory. The structural theory has three main concepts, which are:

      – Social problems are caused by the unequal distribution of power and resources in society.

      – People who are oppressed by these social structures have the potential to change them.

      – Social change happens when people come together to challenge these structures.

The structural theory is relevant in social work because it can help social workers understand the root causes of social problems. It can also help them identify the groups of people who are most likely to be affected by these problems. Additionally, the theory can help social workers develop strategies for social change.
