The qualities of a good spokesperson include a fast thinker with good defensive words, one who can control the minds of people and sway them to her viewpoint, a person with good vocabulary that can entertain the listeners so that they can forget their main line of argument, an individual who can tone down a hot situation and one who can manipulate facts in her or his favor. A spokesperson is someone’s mouthpiece, and that profession requires one to speak on behalf of a certain individual.
Political leaders’ spokespersons are well known for ‘playing around with the truth to protect their leader’s integrity. The main objective is to protect the political leader from any media massacre. They also play a vital role in explaining the political party’s agenda while trying to persuade the masses to believe in their vision.
Former White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany has come under the scrutiny of media and political analysts after she uttered that she never lied during the Donald Trump era. McEnany was responding to news reports saying she lied, and she complained about such false claims [Source]. Speaking on behalf of Trump, she contends that her statements were always truthful, and she never aired out any lies to the people.
In her address, the former White Secretary has defended her character as a woman of faith who finds solace in being honest and truthful. The ‘religious card’ is a popular play by almost everyone whenever they face crucifixion, especially with national issues that might lead to being hated by the whole nation. She also argued that as a mother to her baby Blake, she was honest when executing her duties. Former United States of America President Donald Trump was a ‘unique individual whom many people felt was not fit to be a president. His policies were questionable. But the most alarming thing about him was his social media rants and the choice of vocabulary he used when delivering speeches. Hence working for such a president, McEnany came to the spotlight as one of the catalysts for the deception propelled by Donald Trump. Trump’s was an outspoken person, and his character ‘flaws’ were usually exhibited in public spaces, so it requires a reasonable amount of ‘lies’ to cover up for any of his misfiring acts to immigrants, North Korean citizens, African-Americans, Chinese, the Middle East Countries; basically, Trump offended ‘everyone.’
As she was addressing people on Sunday at ‘Turning Point USA’s Young Women’s Leadership Summit,’ McEnany noted that all her information came from reliable sources. She verified everything before dishing it out to the public. These claims have triggered a plethora of ‘wrongdoings’ being pointed out by journalists, bloggers, political analysts, and other politicians. According to a non-profit American fact-checking website, ‘Politifact,’ McEnany statements have been accurate for only 28%. The word ‘accurate’ is used because her statements could be backed up by more information from other sources. About 59% of her statements were found to be ‘false’ because no backing-up facts or evidence could be found. Most of her addresses were rather ambiguous as she did not use direct statements but would linger off with words in an attempt to confirm or deny something [Source].
One of the major lies revealed is how she denied that Trump had downplayed the effects of coronavirus and gave people the wrong idea of the outbreak, which led to the ‘surprise’ attack of the virus, killing a lot of individuals. In a recorded interview with investigative reporter Bob Woodward, Trump admitted that he had downplayed the outbreak to avoid panic. He had claimed that the coronavirus outbreak was under control and only a few people were infected, so the situation was under control in the states. McEnany denied that Trump downplayed the effects of the pandemic, but the recorded interview proved otherwise [Source].
In another incident, she supported Trump’s claims that Biden had committed fraud in the last elections and ballots were found in the river. Still, she could give the river’s name after being questioned by a journalist. She is also blamed for lying during the elections that the Democrats allowed illegal voting, but she did not have any evidence. According to some journalists, she once lied about police not using tear gas to disperse protesters, but a certain reporter found out that tear gas was used. Also, she exaggerated the number of people who marched to support Trump’s claim that the election was stolen from him by Biden. Thousands marched, but according to her, millions of people were marching against Biden’s victory, and she went on to lay out falsehoods utterances that Biden had admitted to misconduct in the voting process [Source].
In her Sunday address, McEnany blamed the press for just labeling people as liars even when they are innocent and clean. Given the caliber of the audience, aspiring female leaders, and young adults, she might have felt the pressure or need to give an inspiring speech of good qualities that an influential person must have. Surrounding environments impact what a person says or does so that McEnany might have reacted to her setting, or maybe she was starting her own truthful ‘gospel.’
