Democrats tend to consider immigration as a regular occurrence, especially given their country’s developed nature. But the influx of migrants at the US borders, especially the southern side, enacted different views on the issue from the Democratic Party.

Compared to Republicans, Democrats show concern for foreign nationals and are willing to acknowledge their policies on public forums. It was noted that “Republicans see immigration as a critical threat to the country, say restricting immigration makes the US safer, and support using US troops to stop migrants from crossing into the United States. Democrats, on the other hand, do not consider immigration a critical threat, and their views on policy actions substantially and consistently differ from Republicans.”

After various surveys were conducted, released stats revealed how only 17% of Democrats were likely to view immigration as a critical threat, and 24% believed in restricting free passages to migrants. About 23% supported the idea of having US troops preventing immigration at the US-Mexico border [Source].

More data highlights how a few democrats, like the idea of increasing border security to curb the challenges of migrants, believe in strict immigration policies of arresting and deporting migrants, “separating immigrant children from parents when they are accused of entering the US illegally.” Around 36% of democrats cited how legal immigration should be increased.

Also, Democrats argue that immigration policy is an opportunity to renew the “American Community”. The US’s population is characterized by diverse races, enriching their outreach programs to other world countries. Foreign nationals who possess skills necessary for economic development have been welcomed into the country and given a chance to get full citizenship through the Biden administration.

According to the New York times, “For most of the past few decades, the Democratic Party had a pretty clear stance on immigration. It favored a mix of enforcement (like border security and the deportation of undocumented immigrants who committed serious crimes) and new pro-immigrant laws (like an increase in legal immigration and a pathway to citizenship for undocumented people)”.
