The History of International Relations: From Ancient Empires to Modern Globalization

The Role of International Organizations in Promoting Peace and Stability:

There are factors that go into becoming a sovereign state. Some methods are more peaceful than others, but in the end, it all comes down to achieving independence and gaining international recognition. This blog will discuss the steps that need to be taken in order to become a sovereign state. We will also look at some of the challenges that may be encountered along the way.

      Characteristics of a Sovereign State

A sovereign state is a “state with its own institutions and populations that has a permanent resident, territory, and government. It must also have the right and capacity to make treaties and other agreements with other states” [Source].

Characteristics of a sovereign state include :

      • A geographic area that has internationally recognized boundaries
      • Those who reside there on a permanent basis
      • Trade rules and regulations
      • The ability to issue legal currency that is recognized across borders
      • An internationally recognized government that has the authority to enter into treaties, wage war, and exercise other functions on behalf of its citizens.
      • Sovereignty (that no other country should have authority over the country’s territory).

Difference between Sovereign and Non-Sovereign States

The difference between sovereign and non-sovereign states is that sovereign states have their own government structure while non-sovereign states have to answer to a higher government structure. Non-sovereign states can be former independent states which have fallen into transnational states like the UK [Source] whereas a sovereign state is independent. Sovereign states can be regarded as countries on their own, whilst non-sovereign states can either be a country under some foreign government or be part of a larger community.

Are there any Sovereign States in the United States?

It depends on how one defines sovereignty. For instance, the states are sovereign in the sense that they have their own governing structure and share dual sovereignty with the federal government, but are not sovereign enough to declare war or sign a treaty on their own. “The United States is a federation which means each state is part of the Sovereign territory of the US” [Source]

      Sovereign State vs Country

A sovereign state is a country that is independent and has its own government, territory, and population. A sovereign state is recognized by other countries and has diplomatic relations with them. A country is a region that is identified as a distinct entity in political geography. Countries are usually sovereign states, but there are some countries that are not sovereign states such as Taiwan and Kosovo. Other believe that “Country and State are synonymous terms that both apply to self-governing political, entities”.

How to become a Sovereign State

Becoming a sovereign is a process and the steps differ considering the authority which would have been overlooking the particular state.

How do you start a Sovereign Nation?

Starting a sovereign nation requires establishing a government and clearly marking boundaries, then seeking recognition internationally.

Is it possible to start a Country?

It is possible to start a country, for example, after the abolition of slavery, people migrated to their homeland and established well-recognised states. Also, non-sovereign states can detach themselves from the governing authority and become countries. The important thing is to have a large number of people with common consciousness and a sense of unity

What are the requirements to be a Nation?

A nation requires a “group of people of commonality. i.e. the ‘Nation of Islam’ or the ‘Christian Nation’. Requirements to be a nation include having universal features such as the same culture, language, race, history, religion, among others [Source].

What States can become their own Country?

In the US, six states which include Texas, Hawaii, Vermont, Rhode Island, Oregon and The Republic of West Florida once declared themselves as independent nations [Source]. Other states which could survive without the collective US set-up are California, Alaska, New Hampshire, Washington, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Wyoming and Montana [Source].

Is there any unclaimed land on earth?

Reports note that “Bir Tawil is the only truly unclaimed piece of land in the world” and it is located in Africa [Source]. There are various unclaimed islands on earth which include North East Caye, Rockall, Ailsa Craig, The Lagoan Isles, Marie Byrd Land, People’s Republic of Podjistan, Eel Pie Island and Upper Fort/Knights Residence In Birgu [Source].

      What makes a Sovereign State?

A sovereign state has to stand on its own in terms of population, governance issues and territory, and should not be under the authority of any foreign influence or figure.

What are the 4 elements of a Sovereign State?

The 4 elements of a sovereign state are territory, population, government and institutions.

Are there any sovereign states in the US?

The US is a federation so every state is under the control of federal government, hence all the states do not have complete sovereignty, but only enjoys a bit of freedom in governance and institutions.

What is an example of a Sovereign State?

An example of a sovereign state is Vatican City [Source].

What is the difference between a Sovereign State and Country?

‘Country’ is a term which can be used to refer to a state, sovereign state or nation-state [Source]. A sovereign state entails having a government and country “can also be used in a less political manner to refer to a region or cultural area that has no governmental status”.

What are the 8 criteria to be a Country?

It is noted that to be considered a country, a geographical region ought to have “space that has internationally recognized boundaries; has people who live there on an ongoing basis; has economic activity, an organized economy, and regulates its own foreign and domestic trade and prints money; has the power of social engineering (like education); has its own transportation system for moving people and goods; has a government that provides public services and police power; has sovereignty from other countries; and has external recognition” [Source].

What does it mean to be Sovereign?

Being sovereign entails exercising power without limitation. It extends to making your own laws and be able to govern oneself without external interference or dictation [Source].

Can you create your own Sovereign State?

Creating a sovereign state is quite hard for an individual, but a huge chunk of people might be able to do so, especially if they belong to a non-sovereign state.

      Can you buy Sovereignty?

Money cannot buy sovereignty but it can be useful in aiding the process of becoming sovereignty. If a non-sovereign state has stable finances, it can establish institutions, build residential areas to have a population and government building to establish well-functioning government departments.

Can you buy land and start your own Country?

Buying land and starting your own country is next to mission impossible, but a wealthy person might start a town which can eventually grow to become a state or so. World legalities do not make it easy to start a country, and one cannot gather all essential resources needed for a country.

How do you make your own Country?

To make your own country, one has to be eligible by defining a territory, have a permanent population, have a government, and the government ought to interact with other governments. The next step would be to declare independence and be recognised internationally. Then there is need to join the UN for recognition and be able to join the global village of countries [Source].

Can a person buy a Country?

Under the internal laws, countries do not have owners so it is impossible to buy a country for any amount [Source], and there are no laws which says a country cannot be bought. But it is also impossible to find a seller who wants someone to buy a particular country.

      Can you buy a State?

A person cannot buy a whole state, but can purchase plots within a state and have a lot of land [Source].

How do you create a State?

A new state maybe established, but should not be found in the jurisdiction of another state. Other laws forbid a new state to be formed after the unification or detachment of states without the consent of the legislation [Source]. For a US Statehood, there is need for Congress to be involved, the procedure used is as follows [Source]:

      • The territory holds a referendum vote to determine the people’s desire for or against statehood.
      • Should a majority vote to seek statehood, the territory petitions the U.S. Congress for statehood.
      • The territory, if it has not already done so, is required to adopt a form of government and constitution that are in compliance with the U.S. Constitution.
      • The U.S. Congress—both House and Senate—pass, by a simple majority vote, a joint resolution accepting the territory as a state.
      • The President of the United States signs the joint resolution and the territory is acknowledged as a U.S. state.

      Is Germany a Sovereign State?

Germany is a sovereign state, and its sovereignty was recognised in the Treaty of Westphalia in 1648. The country has a stable government that is based on the rule of law, separation of powers, and federalism. Germany is also a member of various international organisations such as the UN, NATO, and the EU.

      What was the first Nation-State?

The first nation-state is believed to have been the Republic of Venice which was founded in the year 697. The Republic of Venice was a sovereign state that had its own constitution, government, and laws. The country also had a strong economy and military. Venice was also recognized by other countries and had diplomatic relations with them.

When did Canada become a Sovereign Independent Nation?

Canada became a sovereign independent nation on July 01, 1867, when the British North America Act was passed by the British Parliament. The act made Canada a self-governing Dominion within the British Empire. Canada had its own Constitution and government and was also responsible for its own defence and foreign affairs.

      Is Taiwan a Sovereign State?

Taiwan is not a sovereign state as it is not recognized by the UN as an independent country. Taiwan is considered to be a part of China, and its sovereignty is disputed by China and other countries. Taiwan does have its own government, Constitution, and laws, but it does not have diplomatic relations with most countries.

      Is Kosovo a Sovereign State?

Kosovo is a partially recognized sovereign state as it is not recognized by all UN member states. Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008, and its sovereignty is recognised by 103 out of 193 UN member states. Kosovo has its own government, Constitution, and laws, but it does not have diplomatic relations with all countries.

What are some examples of Micro-States?

Some examples of micro-states are Monaco, Vatican City, San Marino, and Liechtenstein. These countries are sovereign states that have their own governments, laws, and currency. They are also members of international organisations such as the UN.
